Dynamic tariffs and home energy systems are advancing fast, but they've quietly shifted a burden onto people: constant monitoring. The result is well documented — cognitive overload, app fatigue, and the steep participation drop-off that load-shifting programs consistently see once the novelty wears off. SmartWatt is built on a principle from behavioral science: Daniel Kahneman's distinction between fast, intuitive "System 1" thinking and slow, analytical "System 2" effort. Apps demand System 2. This framing didn't come from us alone. Across multiple 12-week capstone projects, multidisciplinary business and management student teams at a prominent Canadian university independently validated the concept. In a 102-respondent survey across three provinces (December 2025), 89% of people correctly read a green ambient cue as "a good, cheap time to use power" with no explanation given; 77% said they would delay high-energy tasks like laundry or EV charging based solely on a red peak signal; and 73% said simple positive acknowledgment of their effort would keep them motivated. The teams' conclusion, in their own words: the cues are "naturally interpreted via System 1" — no analytical effort required.

The same research identified privacy as the number-one adoption barrier — which is why SmartWatt is deliberately sensor-less. It carries no consumption sensors and no connection to your meter; it simply fetches public grid data over Wi-Fi. There is nothing to surveil, because it isn't watching you — it's watching the grid.

Setup is designed to be frictionless — scan a QR code and connect through a secure web portal to your home Wi-Fi, no technical skills required. Once connected, SmartWatt is built to track your tariff visually in real time, so you know at a glance whether you're at your standard rate or inside a discount window worth acting on. The same visual language shows your solar generating, your home battery filling — and from what source — and your EV charging, with flow indications tracing the energy moving between them.
